What is it like to be an independent contractor? About being an independent contractor: The law does not allow a school to train an independent contractor. The law does not allow a school to tell an independent contractor how to teach. The student tells us if he/she is happy with your teaching. We have the right to replace you with another teacher if the student doesn't like your teaching. You must have experience and competency teaching languages. You have the right to teach at other language schools and to accept private students while you teach through us. You must respect non-compete agreements that you have with other language schools! Independent contractors pay their own taxes, and can deduct mileage to and from class, at $0.445 per mile. That is about $9.00 for driving to a class that is 10 miles away! This reduces your taxes significantly. An independent contractor can deduct from taxes all expenses legitimately incurred in producing income, for example, telephone calls, paper, books, pencils, stamps, trips to bookstores and post office, business cards.
